What is rekeying a lock?
Many people ask about rekeying locks. Rekeying a lock is replacing the old lock pins with new lock pins. This is a process a professional locksmith performs to make previous keys inoperative, make a set of new keys to operate a lock or build a master-key system. In simple terms, rekeying is the process of readjusting the internal mechanisms of the lock so that it functions with a different key. This means you will keep your old lock, but the key you once had will no longer work and will only work with your new set of keys.
ATTENTION NEW HOME OWNERS
While it’s easy to get lost in the excitement of furnishing, decorating and adding your personal touches to your new home, there is one important thing that should not be overlooked: your home’s security. More often than not, new homeowners do not rekey their locks or replace them.
Even if you think you have all of the sets, there is no guarantee that someone else doesn’t have a set of keys that the previous homeowner either didn’t reveal, or forgot about. The previous homeowners could have shared keys with neighbours, contractors, family members and friends.
If you can’t answer the above questions with 100% confidence, than you should change the locks right away. The last thing you want is the safety of your new home compromised. There should be no price tag placed on the safety of your family.
